The Longest Night Service

Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service on the Longest Night of the Year

The First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City will hold its annual “Service of the Longest Night” on the Winter Solstice, Wednesday, December 21, at 7 PM. The Reverend Ericka Parkinson Kilbourne will also commemorate and honor homeless neighbors in our community with special prayers during the service.

This service of reconciliation is open to all who seek peace and comfort for losses they’ve suffered during the past year: loved ones, jobs, marriages, etc. The Longest Night of the Year Service will be held in the Church’s Sanctuary at 121 West Ninth Street in Michigan City.

More than 125 cities across the country sponsor annual memorial services for homeless persons who have died during the year. The National Coalition for the Homeless co-sponsors the events with local groups to raise awareness of issues facing homeless families, and to acknowledge the deaths of homeless men and women who are often estranged from their loved ones, and who die quietly and alone.

The Home Team of La Porte County, the local coalition of homeless service providers, is co-sponsoring the Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service with the First Presbyterian Church. In January 2011, ninety individuals in La Porte County were identified as homeless during an annual “Point in Time Count.” The 2011 count only included sheltered individuals and families, and did not include those living on the streets, or “doubled-up” living with friends or family members. Homeless service providers will repeat the count during January 2012.

For more information on the homeless and the Service of the Longest Night, please contact Tanya Williams at 393-0900.

Congratulations to Our New Members!
On Sunday, November 20th, we welcomed six new members into our congregation. Every member of the new class attended three gatherings with the Pastor this Fall where they spent time getting to know one another, learning about the Presbyterian Church and about our particular church. We are delighted to welcome these new members, and we all look forward to the ways in which God will grow us all together.

The Children's Choir

First Presbyterian Children's Choir rehearsals began in October. Hurry and join to participate in all of our upcoming performances!  We meet for rehearsals every Sunday after worship at 11:15 - 11:45 AM in the Choir Room. Please note the following upcoming performances the children will have at Sunday services.

                         November 27th-- "Simple Gifts"
                         December 11th-- "Pat-a-Pan"
December 24th-- "Il est nee" ("He is Born")

Director Orbovich ("Mr. O.") says the children will be singing in both English and French, so attendance at rehearsals is quite important!

'Tis the Season...

...For lots of giving! The holiday season provides Presbys with many opportunities to be generous and also to give of our time. Please check this homepage,Ways to Help, and the Missions page frequently to find ways to help make the season special for others.

 Current Artist

Our current artist, Bart Tyrrell (Jeanette's husband), is a chiropractor in New Buffalo, Michigan. He began taking group lessons in oil painting from local artist Susan Rosso in 1998. The class met every Friday at the Long Beach Community Center and later became known as "Famous by Friday." He and many others of the original group are still meeting every Friday morning to paint together, but they no longer have a teacher, and now they are painting at the Michigan City Senior Center. Dr. Bart still prefers oil painting and uses a palette knife for a textured look. The sailboat picture is his first painting and the most recent is the sunset scene.
